CALA BUKUTU

In the Cala di Bukuto, a delightful bay with a splendid sea, legend has it that a French ship, having avoided shipwreck, landed here with its precious load: the painting of the Madonna di Custonaci, now venerated in the sanctuary of the village. To remember this event, the Monday before the last Wednesday in August, during the celebrations in honour of Madonna di Custonaci, this legendary event is re-evoked with the suggestive arrival of a sailing boat: A copy of the famous painting is carried ashore while fireworks illuminate the bay. The crowd then carries the sacred image to the village in a suggestive torchlight procession.
