CHIESA E CONVENTO DI SAN FRANCESCO

The church di San Francesco d’Assisi, situated in the square of the same name, with the ex-convent has sixteenth century origins; renovated in the XVIII century by the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico from Trapani, who also designed the monumental doorway crowned with the statue of the Saint of Assisi, holds an extraordinary Madonna di Loreto (1491-92), considered to be one of the best works of the sculptor  Domenico Gagini, the last to have a certain documentation. The large, intensely white nave, holds a considerable apparatus in stucco formed by architectural elements, festoons, little angels and figures: A real masterpiece are the three intensively expressive figures of Mary, Giovanni and Mary of Magdalene, attributed to the stucco maker Gabriele Messina, placed at the foot of a sixteenth century wooden Crucifix.
