Church of S. Nicola
It is said that it was built on an ancient pagan temple site dedicated to Neptune. It’s the city’s second largest basilica and as old as Saint Peter’s church. Its origins date back to 536 A.D., it was erected by General Belisario as a Greek place of worship. In the fourteenth century the Chiaramonte family dedicated it to Saint Nicolas of Bari. Today it has a nave and two aisles and a transept realized by G.B. Amico in 1749. Inside the church there are sculptures placed on the main altar, a marble triptych of Christ (work of Antonello Gagini) dating back to 1560, placed between Saint Peter and Saint Nicolas (works of Vincenzo Gagini).
