Bastion of S.Anna or Imperiale
In the sixteenth century, Viceroy Pignatelli carried out the realization of a plan to strengthen the city’s defences against the continuous raids of the Turkish pirates. The engineer Ferramolino da Bergamo planned and designed a major part of the defensive structures not only for the danger of the raids but also to defend the city from a new weapon of war: firearms. Other interventions for defence were carried out between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries among them the strengthening of the walls facing north, considered the most vulnerable.
