TORRE SIBILIANA
The tower, documented from 1524, was part of the coastal system of watch towers, destined by the Spanish government to protect the entire island from pirate attacks. However, the tower probably existed before as a light- tower to give signals and to sight tuna which were then persuaded into the tuna net which was cast into the sea nearby. Built in rough stone with angle irons in limestone ashlars, has a square form (5,30 x 5,25m ), with very thick walls, about twelve metres high. The name Sibiliana or Scibiliana is possibly reminiscent of the Sibilla which, according to tradition lived in this area and in the city of Lilibeo, or Scibilia Nobili, a young girl who was taken hostage by pirates and kept prisoner.
